Trachemya scripta elegans (eng. naziv je Red-eared Slider)
(U zoo-shopovima ovu će te kornjaču pronaći i pod imenom Pseudemia scripta elegans, ali joj to nije znanstveni naziv.)
Rasprostranjenost
U prirodi ove kornjače obitavaju u južnom dijelu Sjedinjenih Američkih Država.Prirodni okoliš
Žive u slatkim vodama, u polu-vodenom okruženju jezeraca, potoka i rijeka. Vole pjeskovita dna i umjerenu vegetaciju. Trebaju suhu, toplu kopnenu površinu te puno toplije vode za plivanje.Veličina
U prirodi, u pravim uvjetima mogu narasti i do 30 cm. U kućnim akvarijima narasti će oko 25 cm u razdoblju od 3 do 7 godina. Ženke su najčešće krupnije od mužjaka koji će dostići dužinu oklopa oko 20 cm..Životna dob
U prirodi dožive oko 20 godina, ali u zatočeništvu žive i preko 40 ako im se omogući hibernacija (a to je vrlo teško).
Prehrana
Hrane se raznoliko, ali u mladosti najviše mesom. Kako stare polako prelaze na vegetarijansku prehranu. Hrane se ribicama, kukcima, vodenim puževima i vodenim biljem. Hrane se i strvinama.
Razlikovanje
spolova
U mladosti je gotovo nemoguće razlikovati spolove. Poslije, mužjaci
imaju duže prednje pandže (jako, jako duge), a kloaka im je smještena
više prema kraju repa. Rep im je duži i tanji, a plastron im je ponekad
lagano udubljen. Ženke su veće od mužjaka.
Izgled
Trachemys scripta elegans je lako prepoznatljiva vrsta. Karakteriziraju
je "crvene uši" odnosno crvene mrlje na mjestu ušiju. Neki
primjerci imaju mrlju i na vrhu glave, a neki i ispod očiju. Oklop
im je išaran raznim nijansama zelene boje, a kako stare šare se gube
te oklop poprima tamniju boju.
Napomena
Trachemys scripta elegans je najčešća vodena kornjača koja se drži
kao ljubimac. Hrvatski joj je naziv Crveno-uha kornjača, a u pet-shopovima
će vam reći da je to Kalifornijska kornjača. Od kuda ovo Kalifornijska,
nije mi nimalo jasno. Naime, ovoj kornjači Kalifornija nije prirodno
stanište, ali se može tamo naći zato što mnogi vlasnici puštaju ove
kornjače u divljinu.
